  1. MayDayStrong Day of Action this Thursday May 1, 4:30-6:30 pm in Boone

You can choose to take part in a few ways in Indivisible Watauga’s Honk N’ Wave Rally to mark May Day 2025, where we call for a country that puts families over billionaires’ fortunes, public schools over profits, healthcare over hedge funds, and housing over homelessness.

  • Bring a sign and stand or sit along the sidewalk on the Publix side of 321 in Boone, and/or

  • Drive by and wave and honk to show your support, and/or

  • Donate to Hospitality House’s food drive.

  1. Hold the Line: Efforts to Protect Legal Votes 6 Months After the Election

In November 2024, Justice Allison Riggs won her seat on the NC Supreme Court. Six months later, Riggs joined the NC Dems, Carolina Federation, and Down Home NC to report on the ongoing efforts to defend the voters from losing candidate Jefferson Griffin’s desire to throw out votes by voters who did nothing wrong, specifically targeting Democratic-leaning areas and voters most likely to be young, African American, or female.

This case has gone through many court hearings with varying rulings. Currently, the 4th Circuit Court at the federal level has paused any attempt to enforce the NC Supreme Court’s recent ruling, so no votes have been disqualified.

Pursuing this case through the courts–and the court of public opinion–is essential to protect all voters here and across the country. If Jefferson Griffin succeeds in disenfranchising any legal vote, it will encourage others to use the courts to win elections, rather than honor the will of the people. Riggs’ team wants every vote by a legal voter to count, whether the voter supported Riggs or not, because “you cannot break democracy in order to save it,” explained Cat Lawson, Director of Voter Protection for the NC Dems.

The NC Dems are leading this effort, but this is very much a nonpartisan issue that needs our ongoing attention and support. If you would like to stay informed and involved, you can sign up at ncdp.org/protectthevote
